I understood what you are feeling but what about those Deaf parents chose to CI their Deaf babies even though they wanted to have Deaf children but still CI? They thinks that with CI, their Deaf children will have a better chance functioning in world. That really puzzling thoughts to me.

i totally agree with you! it s not parents' decision or they will waste their money and their time!

Your vlog remind me a lot of my parents. when i was born and became deaf at few months old. our doctors were encouraging my parents to get CI for me. know what their decision was? they said no because they feel that they wouldnt accept their child being deaf. they want to accept that their child is deaf. they did. it did change their life after i became deaf. they appreicated it a lot that decision they made for me because they knew i would never like it. and i still dont! i love them for that!

i dont understand why there re many parents dont do that way to love their children for whoever they are. it hurts to see like that and we need to educate the world. deaf children are very important to us.

Oh my!

The statement like you said is nothing new, always been the truth that we have pleaded the hearing parents to let the deaf babies grow with ASL.

But how you said (signed) it from your heart is something...wow! Very powerful!

to the Anonymous at 7:21pm (Aug 1, 2007),
What gives you an idea that deaf children with CI would have a better chance functioning in world? Are you saying that deaf people without CI wouldn't have a chance functioning in world?
We are deaf and we can function in world just the way hearing people do. Only hearing people blocked us from going through the world. LET US GET THROUGH THE WORLD SO WE CAN FUNCTION THE WORLD!

I could find a great word than "powerful"

I'm very pleased with your thoughts and feeling to deaf and hearing community!

Hey B.A.D.!

Well said!

Unfortunately, this is normal for almost every parents out there that they wanted to have a "perfect" baby. I'm not talking about hearing parents only, just in general.

If baby was born something different than what they would expect, either they have to accept or would do anything to fix.

Like anonymous stated what about deaf parents that CI'd their baby, how do we explain that? It's strange, I know.

But, like they said it is freedom of choice, that's what it is all about. Of course it is but I'm against CI babies for sure so hopefully FDA will eventually change age limited to older like 16 or whatever. So, these people can be old enough to make a decision.

Good video! :-D

Beth: I feel you. I understand. It is sad that Medical Establishment and parents think they must cure Deaf children for their own satisfaction. Their message tells us Deaf babies are totally disgusted and need to be cured. Ouch! That hurts.

It reminds me in 60’s and 70’s where treatments as harsh as electric shock treatment have been used in the attempt to 'cure' the 'condition' of Gay children and adults.

Seek Geo: You mean that it is also freedom of choice when parents allow doctor to use Electric Shock treatment in the attempt to cure the condition of Gay children? You are going to close your eyes and allow them trying to ‘cure’ Gay children? You will not be their voice to speak up?

You can check my vlog about how parents and audiologists overlook Deaf children's emotions.

Aidan,

I said "THEY said it is freedom of choice." I never said that.

Read carefully.

Seek Geo:

Yes, I read it very carefully. Thats how i interpreted from your comment. Please feel free to correct me.

You quote "But, like they said it is freedom of choice, that's what it is all about. Of course it is..."

What do you mean "Of course it is...but"

Smile,
Aidan

Hey Aidan,

"Of course it is" I was being sarcastic because I talked about how I am against CI babies so I said I hope FDA will change the age range where they will be old enough to make a decision.

When people tell me, "This is America, we have freedom of choice what we want."

We were like.. um of course it is free country "BUT" these people need to be educated before they actually make a choice if you know what I mean? :-D

Happy Friday!

I am a hearing beginner in ASL and not very adept yet, so I hope it is okay for me to participate here. I am thinking we have it backwards. Why do CI, an invasive and questionably effective procedure? Instead, why not teach everybody ASL like we do other languages? The Baby Boomers with age-related hearing losses and those stemming from damaging activities will soon be joined by the kids who don't know or care that their boom-boxes can/will make them deaf. Also, not everybody is an auditory learner. Might signing all classes while also speaking reach both visual and auditory learners better? It seems signing would be so much more efficient for so many more than CI.

Lydia,

You are more than welcome to participate. No asked need.. :o)

CI is a choice we cannot deny to anyone because we hold strong to our Deaf Culture beliefs. We cannot force the medical community to deny an important prosthetic for anyone that will enable them in their speech and listening.

The fact that one states that "parents should accept their child for who they are" only goes to show how contradicting the statement is.

To truly enforce the statement of acceptance, one must accept all communication whether it is Sim-Com, Spoken English, ASL because communication by itself is so important.

To deny an important prosthetic is just as bad as denying a legless child the ability to walk, an armless child the ability to sign.. you get the gist.

Hey, you said it beautifully and with emotion...came from the deepest part of your heart...we felt it...I felt it! You're absolutely right that parents who gave birth to a child, should direct him/her to explore the world, enjoy it...and not be pressured to "hear" sounds which only makes him/her more frustrated cuz it's painful...why subject them to suffer, with terrible pains, unless it's life threatening...deafness is NOT life threatening...it's a way of life, that God who create the universe, it's a gift to be accepted by the parents. Like you said, parents needs to learn ASL, sign language, in order to communicate with their child/ren.
Thanks for sharing this, heart wrenching but true, vlog. Bless your heart!

I am a 46 year old man, who was totally deafened at the age of ten.
When the C/I first came out, my dad began calling doctors, all over the nation....he didn't ask me if I were interested in that contraption for several weeks, too.

That infuriated me!!!

The thing is, although I've been without hearing (and loving it) for 36 years, my parents still cannot accept their child was deafened.

I know a woman, who was born premature and has never heard but her mother forced her to go to speech school and public schools until she was forced to quit and get her GED, out of the tenth grade.
The problem, there, is that the mother denies the daughter is different.

Well, at the age of about 52, the duaghter got the implant and the entire family keeps saying she can hear perfectly.
My disagreement stems from two things....First, I know the implant is merely an immitation of sound and a person must have a working knowledge of sound to make it be good....This woman does not.
Secondly, when the videophone became available, the man came to my house and, when he left, told me he was going to this woman's house.
There it is again....If she can hear, "perfectly," as they say, why does she need a VP?

I believe that these parents often choose CI because doctors pressure them. We are trained to trust our doctors and very little negitive information about CI is available to these new, scared parents. Why are they scared? They have no clue what it means to be deaf. They do not understand the odds of being a sucessful happy deaf adult. I think this decision is rarely an act of unacceptance, but it is an act of ignorance! I would prefer they wait and allow the child to choose, but if they are going get a CI they need to grant the child access to both languages...otherwise they cannot communicate in the pool or at the beach or at the play ground or if the CI is broken!

Anonymous said...

I agree that parents should not suddenly decide to C.I. their babies or do it at all either, they should appericate their baby for who they are and try learn to use ASL so they can communicate with the child. right on B.A.D....
